The Gazette: Potomac residents get down with upright paddle boarding
Maverick and Duce were featured in the SUP article in the Wednesday, October 22nd edition of The Gazette. "It's really fun and it gets you stronger," said Nick "Maverick" Cohen, 12, a member of the Board Rats. "We like to go down the rapids, and not many people do it yet."
Many participants practice the sport on the ocean or other "flat" water," but the Board Rats first got the idea to take to the rapids at Great Falls over the summer and have been practicing there ever since.
According to Wayne "Cobra" Cohen, Nick Cohen's father and fellow member of the Board Rats, group members often get double-takes when they practice the unusual-looking sport at Great Falls.
"It's brand new and there are very few people down there that do it at all," said Cohen. "You get a ton of questions like, ‘Oh my Gosh, what is that?'"

SUP
Stand up paddle boarding, known as SUP, is all the rage. This so called "new sport" was actually founded in the 1500's by Hawaiian watermen. SUP was brought to life by Laird Hamilton, an avid water sports guru. Many of our members recently starting engaging in this sport. Greg "Suggs" Miller, Scott "Uncle Buck" Jorss, and Wayne "Cobra" Cohen have all been doing SUP on flat water, in the ocean, and even on the white water rapids of the Potomac River. Some famous stars are even getting into the sport. Jennifer Aniston and Matthew McConaughey have both been seen doing SUP (but only on flat water!). Paddleboarding only requires three things: a board, paddle, and water, making it an easy sport to pick up!
Want to learn how to SUP? Take lessons!
If you’re interested in learning how to do SUP on the Potomac River, contact PBR founding member Scott “Uncle Buck” Jorss at jorssfam@comcast.net. Uncle Buck will take you through the basics, including (a) proper stance, (b) paddle tips, (c) how to fall safely (and to get back on your board!), and (d) learning to understand the river.
Checkout Uncle Buck’s YouTube video.
One of our sponsors, H2Air, which is owned by PBR members Dave and Paula Loop, have an awesome array of SUPs. Please support our sponsors!

Scurfing
Hello Rats, Slam here. Do any of you surf? What about wakeboard? Well if you do, you still may not have heard of scurfing. Scurfing is just like wakeboarding, except with a twist -- you are on a surfboard!! Scurfing is soo much fun. Early in the summer, Cobra, Trophy Wife, Crash, B, Pickle, my sister Rachel, her friend Natalie and I went out on Cobra’s new boat. The boat has twin 250's… ya, I said TWIN 250's! This boat sends up a huge wake -- almost big enough to scurf without the line. Everyone got up scurfing. but there were a few people who deserve kudos. Rachel, Natalie, Trophy Wife all tried scurfing for the first time and got up. Crash not only got up, but got out of the wake multiple times on both sides!! KUDOS! After everyone had gone, Pickle and I decided to mix things up. We scurfed on a skimboard! Since a skimboard has no fin, you can spin on the water. I went first and got up three times, but then ate it on my third time. (That’s why they call me Slam!) Pickle won the award for persistence. With lots of cheering from his fellow rats, he got up on his 4th time and rode away clean!! Kudos, Pickle! If any rats want to come scurfing or skimming with us, all you have to do is give Cobra a shout-out, because we.... LIVE 2 RIDE!! |

Standup Paddleboarding
Shredder and Trophy Wife hit Silver Lake in Rehoboth Beach on stand up paddleboards on July 4th weekend. Dodging low-lying bridges and snapping turtles, they managed to make it to the end of the lake without getting wet. Shredder even balanced two water bottles on her board, all the while telling interested bystanders where to rent a paddleboard….. H2AIR in Dewey Beach. Contact Dave or Paula at 302-227-1105. |

Surfing the Waves at Tower Roads
Hey everyone – this is the man who can crash like no one else, SLAM. The waves down at Tower Road in Dewey Beach Delaware have been amazing! If you surf, or would like to learn, get your butt down here and ride the waves with the Rats.
Cobra, Maverick, Pickle and I all hooked up in late June for a bunch of sessions. Although the waves were small, we got some sick rides and even had a mini competition to see who could catch the most waves! Cobra thinks he won, and Maverick, Pickle and I didn’t want to blow it for him so we just let him keep on thinking that.
After Pickle, Maverick and B left for camp, Cobra and I had many more sessions. One day we went to the Indian River Inlet, and it was SSSSOOOOO cold because I didn’t have my wetsuit. There was a south swell that was wrapping around the jetty, and we got some long rights. Cobra cross-stepped forward on his longboard, then flipped out and cross-stepped back. Kudos!
Just last week we rode almost every day in a huge swell. I finally came to my senses and used Shredder's 8 foot Walden longboard. I did MUCH better on that board and rode better than I ever have. Thanks to the bigger board, I was able to catch a small barrel, along with a bunch of other long rides!! I was so stoked that the next day I pulled my funds together and bought my own 8 footer.
Suggs joined us that day and was tearing it up. He, Cobra and I had an awesome evening session as the sun went down.
Well, that’s all for now. Hope you all are having a great summer. Get your butts down here to walk the nose!

Founding Teamrider Cobra tried kiteboarding for the first time. Cobra has windsurfed for many years, but kiteboarding really kicked his butt. He took a lesson from kiteboarding guru Dave Loop of H2Air (Dewey Beach). Dave is an outstanding teacher, and in no time flat had Cobra working the kite like a champ. But then the time came to put Cobra in the board, and it didn’t go so well. Cobra got propelled into 5 hard faceplants before calling it a day. Cobra said, “Man, I got worked, but I plan to hit it again soon.”
